Function word
Function words, also known as grammatical words, are words that primarily serve syntactic and structural purposes in a sentence rather than conveying independent meaning. According to Iyabode (2011), these words—which include articles (the, *a*), prepositions (in, on), conjunctions (and, but), pronouns (he, they), and auxiliary verbs (is, have)—"do not normally get stressed except for the sake of emphasis" (p. 53).
